Grades 6-7 Classes
Thanks to the Neighborhood Parents for the Hurley School's generous donation of a class set of guitars, the 7th grade students are learning how to play melodies and chord accompaniments on this instrument. Learning standard chords and progressions will serve as a life skill for these students. The students wrote original blues songs, created an original verse to This Land is Your Land, and finished the year by writing their own class song, called Hiking.
The 6th graders have worked on understanding different ways that texture works in music. The current form is the canon. Students are experiencing this through games, songs, and instrumental/rhythmic compositions. Students will also be creating their own canon in this unit. Most recently, they have studied the ways in which poetry and music overlap in their use of repetition, contrast, rhythm, and other devices. They composed original music for the poem Still I Rise by Maya Angelou for the concert.
